The Gift You Give Yourself – MFRWAuthor 2018 Week 21

This week’s writing prompt is, The best gift I ever got.

The best gift I ever got was probably one I gave myself, and that was laser vision correction. I had to start wearing glasses in the second grade. I eventually moved to contacts as a teenager. Life with glasses is such a hassle. In addition to the embarrassing frames you pick as a kid that your parents for some reason don’t talk you out of and end up in several years of class photos, you always have to worry about losing or breaking them. Having a cloth to clean them. Getting a new prescription every couple of years (if you are lucky enough to afford them or have vision coverage). And upgrading to contacts usually looks better on most people, but you always have to have contact lens solution, you can never forget to take them out at night. It’s like you can never do anything spur of the moment if you don’t have an emergency lens kit with you. You can’t see if you get up in the night. And what if there is an emergency and you need to run outside?

So the best thing I ever gave myself was laser eye surgery. I call them my bionic eyes. It is the one thing I think of when people ask if I have ever bought something and never regretted it. It was the best thing I ever did for myself. A true life upgrade and I recommend it to everyone.

What about you? What’s the best gift you ever got? Let me know in the comments.
