Interview with Joni Parker
- Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I was born in Chicago, graduated high school in Phoenix, and went to college in Florida. I have a Bachelor’s degree and two Master’s degrees. I’ve lived in Japan and Italy as well as a number of cities in the U.S. I retired from the U.S. Navy with 22 years of service, but went back to work after my husband passed away. I retired again after 7 years to devote my time to writing. Recently, I moved to Tucson, Arizona with my sister and love it here.
- When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book?
I didn’t get serious about writing until eight years ago. My favorite movie was “The Lord of the Rings” and I made up a character by the name of Alex. She gave me so many stories that I had to write them down or my head was going to explode. It took me three months to dump them into my computer. This gave me the basis for my first series, “The Seaward Isle Saga.” The first of the books was “The Black Elf of Seaward Isle,” published in 2010 and 2012, followed by “Tangled Omens,” and “Blood Mission.” As I wrote these books, more stories followed and became the second series, “The Chronicles of Eledon.” The first book in the series, “Spell Breaker,” was selected as a 2016 Book Excellence Award Finalist and the second book, “The Blue Witch,” was a 2017 International Book Award Finalist. “Gossamer” is the latest book in the series and “Noble Magic” is coming up.
- How did you choose the genre you write in?
Any time someone writes about Elves, it’s considered fantasy so I had no choice. I combine it with the action/adventure genre because that’s what I like to read.
- Do you work with an outline or just write?
I just write. I will jot down some notes so I don’t forget them, but I wouldn’t call it an outline. It’s more a direction that I want the book to take. Then I sit at the computer and write.
- Can you tell us about your challenges in getting your first book published?
I was so terrified of book agents I couldn’t go that route. I went directly to self-publish on Amazon.
- Can you tell us about your upcoming book?
“Noble Magic” is the last book in “The Chronicles of Eledon” series and should be out later this year (2017). Lady Alexin (Alex) discovers five large diamonds, tied to Elf mythology. The myth makes no sense to her, but she must secure the stones until she figures it out. The solution comes from two unlikely sources: a gang of wizards called the Octagon and a major change in the way Elves are governed. Only then can the real purpose for the diamonds be resolved.
When I was younger, I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. Part of my reason for dropping out of college was because I didn’t know what to major in. I was envious of my sister who knew from an early age, she was going to major in math. Good for her, but math was the last subject on my mind. I joined the Navy and found a track I liked. I became a photographer. I covered local news items, accidents, and even shot portraits. It was fun, but not a career path. When I got out of the Navy, I wanted to finish college but I was lost again. What to major in? I chose accounting because all businesses needed it and I went on to get my Bachelor’s and an MBA. After working in the field for a year, I went back in the Navy and asked for any assignment other than accounting. It worked. After 22 years in the Navy, I retired. My husband and I moved into our motorhome and hit the road. Unfortunately, he passed away and I went back to work at a government job. Then I found writing. I hadn’t written a thing since I was 14 but I was smitten by the bug and have been writing ever since. “Gossamer” is the sixth book I’ve had published and is the third book in a four book series, “The Chronicles of Eledon.” Hope you enjoy it. I had fun writing it.
